Day in the Life: of a Digital Communications Intern
Dom Murray has recently completed a Digital Communications internship with the British Fashion Council, which pushed him out of his comfort zone in ways outside of his role’s responsibilities. “I’m not used to being part of such a close-knit team, so as someone who considers themselves as a bit of an introvert, I found it hard to throw myself into things like team get-togethers (purely because the social setting made me a bit anxious),” he tells FMR. “However, once I came out of my shell at the BFC (British Fashion Council) Summer Party, I felt like everyone was more approachable because I knew them all a little bit more – and I felt a lot less out of place. I personally feel that getting to know your team helps improve not only your experience at work, but your performance.” This role has helped him step into new environments that are notoriously hard to access. “Being at BFC gave me a front-seat ticket to many things I would not have had the privilege of experiencing without this internship,” he explains. “Getting to see the NEWGEN fashion shows on the last day of London Fashion Week was an unforgettable experience for me, considering it was my first time seeing a fashion show in person.”
While this position focussed on the importance of branding, Dom’s experience in FMR’s Fashioning Emerging Professionals programme was vital in building the creativity needed for this role – even when his mentor worked in a completely different department. “My experience with FMR was a very nurturing environment, and my mentor Elle was focused on bettering me as a creative even if our career aspirations/paths were completely different,” he says. “I was able to experience seeing 3D fashion design in the workplace (thanks to a video call Elle organised with Petratex) which was an exciting experience for me because I had only seen 3D fashion used in video games or for high fashion brands’ social media – this made something that seemed like a distant reality way more accessible to me.” Follow a typical day in Dom’s job role below.
9:30am: Arrive at the BFC offices from Tottenham Court Road station, ready to start the day.
10am: I head into my daily morning catch up call, with either the Marketing or wider Communications team (depending on the day). This is where we update each other on where we are with certain projects, bring up anything we may need help with, provide new ideas for marketing or social media, and divvy out responsibilities for new tasks.
11am: Usually I would work on digital assets for the BFC’s various social media pages, i.e. the London Fashion Week schedule for Instagram, various Fashion Week throwbacks for Instagram, or assets to promote various panels for the Institute of Positive Fashion forum.
1pm: Time for my one hour lunch break. Generally if it is sunny or not busy, I’m able to have this on the roof.
2pm: Creating various image edits i.e., for Fashion Week, Institute of Positive Fashion forum, City Wide Celebration, etc. – in addition to updating the BFC’s Pinterest with exciting images from previous Fashion Weeks.
3pm: I have a catch up with my colleague Holly, usually on Mondays, to make sure I can keep up with my workload and see if there is anything new we can work on.
4pm: Last-minute check-ups with the team to see if there are any other tasks that need to be finished by the end of the day, or checking the Production Schedule to make sure everything is on track.
5:30pm: Finish for the day.
