Day in the Life: of a Brand and Creative Intern
Working as Brand and Creative intern at Lazy Oaf, Ella Caddy Lee gets to involve the creative elements of her Fashion Design degree in new ways. “My main responsibilities involve coming up with ideas for editorial and social media content, as well as helping to shoot some of it,” she explains. “I support the PR Coordinator on the strategic gifting programme and sample movement to fulfil press or shoot requests, as well as help the creative team on ecomm and campaign shoots.” This experience, which was obtained after completing FMR’s Fashioning Emerging Professionals programme, is perfect for Ella while she figures out exactly what career direction she wants to take. “I know I would love to work in the fashion industry and I love being creative, but I don’t 100% know what career path I would like to go down just yet. I know I would like to work for a company whose ethics align with my own, but I am still learning what I like and don’t like.”
As Ella is still undertaking this role, we asked her what she’s learnt so far. “Where do I start! I have learnt so much already,” shes says. “I have learnt how to professionally correspond with external companies confidently and efficiently, how to use specialist stock software for sample movement and gifting orders, and to constantly be looking for inspiration in everyday life to apply creative content ideas. Also, my mum having me up a ladder at a young age painting walls comes in handy when you need to construct a set for a fashion shoot! What I love at Lazy Oaf is that they have a very productive and interactive response to problem solving. Most things are done in the in-house studio, which means there’s freedom to get as creative as possible when reimagining and utilising the space.” While everyday is different in the office, Ella pinpoints what an average day looks like down below.
9am: I arrive at the office and make myself a coffee and take a biscuit from the tin to start my day off right. I then check my emails and the work group channel to respond to any questions and the odd meme the brand team sends.
10am: I check the social media accounts, respond to messages and play with the office dog.
11am: I head downstairs with the creative team to the in-house studio and help create some content for social media – one day I got to do a leg dance in funky tights for a Instagram reel.
12pm: I attend a weekly broadcast meeting to see what the plan is for the week ahead and make notes of how I can assist the brand team.
1pm: I walk down to the shop to grab some lunch as I usually forget to make it the night before. On one particular day I sat in the dog park on my lunch break and got to play with some puppies!
2pm: I head back downstairs to the studio to help paint a set for a photoshoot and place orders for set design or props. Throughout a project it is my responsibility to keep a track of any deliveries and returns and total costs.
3pm: Depending on the day, I have some press and marketing packages to send to stylists for photoshoots. I find them in the office, package them up and book a courier to drop them off. I keep a track of this and correspond with stylists to request samples back to the studio. I also keep an eye out on social media for any content posted in Lazy Oaf clothing, which I then add to a weekly report.
4pm: I do some research and find inspiration for social media content, add it to a digital library and pitch some ideas to the social media manager.
5pm: After catching up with the team at the end of the day about true crime podcasts and doing the ‘What Condiment Are You Quiz’ written by the Copywriter, it’s time to go home!
