Day in the Life: As A Make-Up Artist

Whether you’re at the helm of a fashion brand or as producing parties attended by the who’s who of industry folk, a lot of job roles in the creative industry are often overly glamorised. While plenty of positions do have their perks – including classifying as ‘a cool job title’ – daily admin, logistical work and other unspoken aspects are what make up the majority of these roles. FMR’s Day in the Life series is here to give you insight into what a regular day could look like, starting with make-up artist Jinny Kim.
As a freelancer based in London, Jinny works on a variety of projects from magazine editorials to painting the faces of international celebrities. Read her breakdown of a shoot day down below.
8-9am: Arrive at shoot location ten mins early to set up my makeup (or sometimes with hair) station. I then discuss with the team what the final looks are and start make-up on the model’s face.
10am: We do lighting tests with the camera, final touch-ups and I start the first beauty look.
11am: I’m always standing by the set to touch up, keep checking the monitor to see if the model’s face becomes oily and too shiny.
12pm: Almost finished shooting one out of three outfits for today, but keep carrying on.
1pm: Lunch time! We usually have a shorter lunch than the rest of the team (about ten minutes less) so that we can start touching up the model’s make-up for the afternoon. We do this to catch up with the time schedule.
2pm: Start touching up, which includes changing the lip colour for the next outfit.
3pm: Keep checking if the model’s make-up looks good – also never stop touching up.
4pm: My assistant starts to clean the brushes that I don’t need for the rest of the day.
5pm: Almost finished with only one look to go. I start packing up and my assistant stays on set.
6pm: Wrap time, my assistant finishes cleaning my beauty blender and brushes and packing up while I remove the model’s make-up. I say goodbye and hug the team before I leave.
7pm: Finally arrive home and have dinner.
8pm: Prepare for tomorrow’s shoot by re-packing my kit.
